Around the world, and in Kannada
The Mahalakshmi Ashtakam is eight short verses to the Goddess of fortune, kept close in Kannada homes on Fridays, at Varalakshmi Vratam, and through Diwali. The great Mahalakshmi temple of Kolhapur, revered across the Deccan, draws devotees from Karnataka too. The verses come from the Padma Purana, first spoken by Indra in praise of Lakshmi, each one ending at her feet. People chant them for prosperity, for wellbeing, and for the grace of the Mother who removes want. Short and easy to learn, the Ashtakam is often a child's first stotra. This version presents the same eight verses in the Kannada script, so anyone who reads Kannada can chant them with ease.
