Sri Mahalakshmi Ashtakam in Malayalam

श्री महालक्ष्मी अष्टकम्

Padma Purana Deity: Mahalakshmi Metre: Anushtup 11 verses

Around the world, and in Malayalam

The Mahalakshmi Ashtakam is eight short verses to the Goddess of fortune, kept close in Malayalam homes on Fridays and through Diwali and the Varalakshmi Vratam. The verses come from the Padma Purana, first spoken by Indra in praise of Lakshmi, each one ending by bowing at her feet. People chant them for prosperity, for wellbeing, and for the grace of the Mother who removes want. Short and easy to learn, the Ashtakam is often the first stotra a child is taught, and Lakshmi is welcomed in every home that lights a lamp for her. Here the same eight verses are set in the Malayalam script, which carries every Sanskrit sound, so they transfer letter for letter.

About the Mahalakshmi Ashtakam

Just eight verses, but they pack a punch. Indra composed this after Mahalakshmi appeared in her warrior form to destroy the demon Kolasura and save the gods. Every verse ends with the same line: "Mahalakshmi Namostu Te" (Salutations to Mahalakshmi). That repetition is the whole point. It builds, verse after verse, describing a different form of her grace each time. People chant it on Fridays, during Lakshmi puja, during Navaratri. It's short enough to memorize and powerful enough that you'll want to.
